Volunteers
The club is run entirely by volunteers, including coaches, committee members and a team of general helpers who give their time on Saturday mornings, race days and other events. The team of helpers carries out a variety of roles including controlling entry to the circuit on Saturday mornings, selling club kit, and supporting events by registering riders, carrying out gear checks, marshalling on the circuit, timing races or taking coffees to the rest of the team.
We are always delighted to welcome new volunteers, whether you have a specific skill you’d like to offer, or can be available on a regular or ad hoc basis to help out at the circuit.
Specific roles we are currently looking to fill include:
Coaches
Coaches are essential to the running of the club. We provide support for any volunteer wanting to become a level 1 or level 2 coach. We are able to provide the level 1 pre-qualification in-house and we can fund the level 2 course (conditions apply). New coaches are asked to coach a minimum of 15 sessions a year.
Race Organiser
The race organiser registers the Sulis races with British Cycling and opens the online registrations. They allocate the volunteers on the day and work with the commissaires on the finish line to get the results for the race and do the prize giving. The Race Organiser also does the returns to British Cycling and pays the bills. We have between 4 and 6 races a year. Anyone interested can shadow the existing organiser for one race, take charge on the next one with the existing organiser present. We have a great team of volunteers to help on the day. All training will be given!
Digital volunteer
The club’s IT set up has grown rather organically – anyone who works as an architect will know the scene well. We desperately need a volunteer to assess our digital set-up and devise a simple roadmap that will allow us to make best use of low cost solutions to manage our mails and data in a safe and secure manner. The role will be working with the Chair to establish the key outputs and delivery plan. The volunteer will then put in place the solution and establish it as BAU.
This digital role is a background task so is ideal for a volunteer who cannot commit to coaching – volunteering on regular Saturdays. This effort will make a huge difference to the running of the club.

BECOME A BRITISH CYCLING QUALIFIED COACH
If you are passionate about youth participation in sport and can see the lifelong benefits that sports give our young people, how about joining our Sulis Scorpions coaches group. You don’t necessarily have to be an advanced level cyclist to coach: being able to spot technique, provide feedback and generate rapport with the riders are more important than your own cycling or fitness level.
In return for your commitment to being an active member of our highly motivated coaching team (who are all volunteers), we can fund you to receive formal cycle coach training and accreditation by British Cycling.
British Cycling Young Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering through this scheme, or as part of the DofE (Duke of Edinburgh) Award, then we have a few opportunities per year. You can assist the coaches with younger riders and help out at events when you are not competing.
